A letter from Jeanna Kindle of the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank detailing activities and results from the recently completed year and more.
Greetings Dan,
I wanted to send you an update on what's been going on in Los Angeles for the past 2 seasons.
In 2010, we had a large number of participants in the program, and received 41,586 pounds as a result of your wonderful leadership. The following colleges and universities participated in 2010:
Aveda Institute - Los Angeles, Cal State Los Angeles, Cal Poly Pomona,
Concord Law School, El Camino College, L.A. Film School, Loyola, National
Holistic Institute, Pepperdine, UCLA, USC, Western University.
We had one addition that I thought did a remarkable job in 2010, the Smith College Club - LA Chapter. Even though they aren't a "college or university" in the traditional sense, they were so wonderful to work with, I
thought it would be nice to recognize them.
As of this report, we received 31,799 pounds. I'd like to give special recognition to USC for raising 17,574 pounds of the 31,799 pounds we've received thus far. Go Trojans! Other participants as of today are: Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State Los Angeles, Loyola, Mt. St. Mary's, Pepperdine, UCLA, University of the West, and Whittier College. I'm looking forward to ending this year with a bang!
One other thing I'd like to mention is how much I've enjoyed working with you over the past five years. Since 2007, with your hard work and efforts, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank has been the recipient of 168,282 pounds from various colleges, schools, and universities. I can't thank you enough for making me look good. Your kind words and inspiration have truly been a high point of my days.
As you know, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank (like so many other non-profits and companies), is undergoing a number of transitions. To that end, the Food Drive component of my work has been transferred to the Development Department. However, you can still count on me to send reports and news.
Thanks again for all of your efforts!
Thank you Jeanna, and to all other active community members who help make STUFH successful.

Oregon State Univeristy reports in that a total of $105,000, or the equivalent of 525,000 pounds of food was raised during the past academic year. A fantastic number!

Deb McGeorge, Food Resource Manager with FOOD for Lane County in Western Oregon, sends in a report detailing the Spring Scrimmage at the University of Oregon:
Spring Scrimmage totals 2011 68,592 lbs. and $1,148.65
This event continues to grow. Spring Scrimmage is where the Ducks choose first string, second string, quarterback, etc... It's an opportunity for families to come out and see a game free, while donating food to FOOD for Lane County. With all of the exposure the Ducks have received this past year, it really helped increase attendance. We are really looking forward to another great year in 2012. GO DUCKS!

Martin Larocca, Environmental Resource Manager for the State University of New York at Binghamton, reports that the university raised approximately 10.4 tons, or about 20,800 pounds of food and other items during the past academic year to help fight hunger.

Krishna Suthar, a member of the Class of 2013 at the University of Oklahoma, has been named the CKI-STUFH abassador for the upcoming school year. She has already started outlining plans for the upcoming year, including constant promotion of STUFH, it's mission, and how students can help in the effort to feed the hungry. Currently in the works are developing a few marketing campaigns and promotional 'events' to be held over social media networks across campuses nationwide. More information will be available as it becomes available.
With Krishna at the lead, there is no doubt that the passion to serve the less fortunate will be contagious and motivate so many of the CKI clubs across the nation!

The 2011 school year was another great success for the Colorado University-Boulder community, as students expanded the simple food drive concept into broader themes and events with great results. Peter Simons, Director of the CU-Boulder Institute for Ethical and Civic Engagement, writes in with this report:
- The Buffalo Can Challenge was folded into an inaugural and larger Food and Environmental Justice Week. We wanted to broaden the scope to not only collect food , but to educate about food justice and environmental justice.
- The week consisted of films, panel discussions, a day of service, a Food for Thought Dinner at all campus dining halls, a Food Justice Fairand the Buffalo Can Challenge (BuCC). A consortium of university departments, student groups and Community Food Share (our county food bank) sponsored the week.
- BuCC collected 13,478 pounds of food, more than doubling the 2010 poundage. Sixteen teams built can sculptures which were on display outside our student union (the University Memorial Center).

In the 2010-2011 academic year, in a very close match, Auburn defeated
University of Alabama in the their Food Fight battle, 234,116 to 218,510 pounds, for a total
of 452,676 pounds of food. Martha Henk, executive director of the East
Alabama Food Bank reports that it was a close battle right to the very
end. And of course, as Henk noted, "There are no losers, only winners, as
hundreds of thousands of meals were provided to feed the hungry."
