Seven Washington Metropolitan Area Universities
are teaming up to fight
hunger in an End Of Semester Food Drive during the months of November
and
December. All Food collected will be given to the Capital Area
Food Bank
which is coordinating the food relief effort. The food drive is
sponsored
by Students Team Up To Fight Hunger (STUFH) and will include The
University of Maryland, Georgetown, George Washington, Howard,
American,
Catholic and George Mason universities. According to figures compiled
by
the Capital Area Food Bank, approximately 633,000 residents in
the
Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area are at risk of hunger and of
this
number, 200,000 are children. (2006 Statistics) With the recent
economic
downturn, these numbers are greatly increasing and more than ever
before,
citizens must step up to help their less fortunate neighbors.
Circle
Kiwanis International (CKI) is partnering with STUFH in this Capital
drive
and in other similar efforts throughout the country.
